Ho’oponopono (pronounced Ho-oh-poh-no-poh-no) is “an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness,” a clearing technique that is extremely powerful in healing.
Reconciliation is the act of bringing two (or more) separate pieces together. It can be reconciliation between two people, or two parts of yourself.
Forgiveness is the act of releasing the need to hold onto negative emotions or feelings toward yourself or others, to free up that Life Force energy to use in your life in more positive ways.
Holding anger, resentment, jealousy and other heavy, negative emotions can be very damaging – and hurt the person who is carrying them, not the person they are aimed at.
Forgiveness is an act of Self Love
You don’t have to reconcile with someone in order to Forgive them. Forgiveness is an act of self-love and allows you to go about your life without holding onto things inside that have hurt you.
Forgiviness does not mean forgetting pain that someone has caused you in the past, it is an internal act of love that allows you to let go of the hurt so you can love yourself and move forward.
When you are struggling with anger, resentment or regret for yourself, forgiveness can help you to let go of those emotions that keep you stuck and separate from self-love.
This pain and separation can lead to all kinds of ailments on the emotional, mental, spiritual and even physical level.
This Ho’oponopono prayer is very powerful as it allows you to re-align yourself with the true love of source, eliminating the separation of the illness, pain or suffering being experienced (whether it’s with yourself or another).
What can you use Ho’oponopono on?
The Ho’oponopono prayer can be used on any pain or suffering, or any negative, heavy, icky feeling you feel in your body.
It can be used on anything you don’t like or want, including negative thoughts, beliefs, feelings, relationships and more.
How does Ho’oponopono Work?
Ho’oponopono works by bringing the separate parts of your perspective back into alignment with the healing power of the unconditional love of Source.
It’s power stems from total acceptance and unconditional love, that you are a whole being that comes from love, and is love, and that any pain or suffering you are experiencing is simply a perceived separation from the truth of who you really are.
Using Ho’oponopono is simple and can be used in different ways depending on your preference.
Choose something you would like to use this healing prayer on.
Here are some examples:
- Anger you have toward your mother
- Resentment you have toward a co-worker
- Regret you have from a choice you made in the past
- Hate toward a part of your body
- Fear that something won’t go right in your life
- Anxiety that you won’t get everything done that you need to
- Feeling like you aren’t worthy enough
- Feeling that you are not deserving of love
…and the list goes on.
The Ho’oponopono prayer is:
Please forgive me
I love you
It’s that simple.
The phrases can be used in this order or any order you would like, as long as all of the phrases are used.
Let’s break it down into the meaning and power of each phrase.
When using this prayer, you are speaking to your highest self / the divine / source whatever you like to call it. The ultimate power that can restore you, your thoughts and your being to complete health and oneness.
I’m sorry – for believing a perspective that is not one of pure love. You are not admitting blame, just recognizing the separation from love.
Please forgive me – for not seeing that I am one with love.
Thank you – for forgiving me for my separate perspective. You are automatically receiving this blessing of forgiveness, for all you have to do is ask for it.
I love you – and once again you are reconnected to the oneness of love and its holy blessing.
How to Use It
I like to use the prayer over and over again. I will say the prayer 10 times even up to 50 times or more in a time where I am feeling triggered or wanting to focus on a specific ailment that I want to heal (whether it is a negative mindset, a judgment, feeling of fear, or pain in my ankle).
Use it on any of the topics listed above and anything else you feel negative about.
Get even more specific
You can also use it to get more specific on a particular issue. For example, if you are feeling discomfort or anger toward your stomach, you can say:
I’m sorry stomach that you are feeling this way.
Please forgive me for not loving you as you are.
Thank you for always being there for me, digesting my food and allowing me life.
I love you for all that you are and what you bring to my life.
Keep repeating the phrases, change them or expand them as you go through them or go back to just using the simple phrases over and over. You can use them in any combination.
You may experience small shifts or big ones. The important thing is to try and see what happens for you.
Sending healing to a loved one
Another great way to use this tool is to use it on a friend, family member or anyone you want to send healing energy to.
You can hold an image of them in your mind’s eye (or an injury of theirs you want to assist in healing) and repeat the prayer over and over again.
See your words and energy of love, compassion and forgiveness leaving you and landing on them wherever they are. They can receive this prayer night or day whether they are resting or participating in activities.
Curiosity may even inspire you to call them later to see how they are feeling.
A short story about the power of Ho’oponopono
There is a story that Dr. Joe Vitale talks about in his book Zero Limits. It is an incredible story about his friend Dr. Hew Len who worked at a mental hospital with patients that were so ill, they had to be chained in their cells.
Workers at the hospital were in so much fear about the patients they would crawl down the hallways with their backs glued to the wall.
Dr. Hew Len was recruited in an attempt to help these sick patients — he agreed to help them as long as he didn’t have to have contact of any kind with them.
He said he would sit in his office and use a prayer to heal them. He sat at his desk, day after day, flipping through the patients’ files saying the Ho’oponopono prayer over and over again.
Over time, the patients began to miraculously heal. More and more patients became sane and healthy and were released.
Finally, every patient was healed and released and they ended up closing down the mental hospital all together.
Now that is just a summary of the story, so be sure to read Dr. Joe Vitale’s book Zero Limits to hear the entire thing, but this example of miraculous healing has stuck with me ever since I learned this technique.
The power of love and oneness, a connection to the Divine, is beyond anything our minds can even imagine.
I hope you will try this tool and see how it can work for you!
I’d love to know your experience with Ho’oponopono, so please be sure to tell me in the comments. 🙂
Much Love and Healing,
